Paris and the Pippin mb-height 2991 acted as one of Lords'Paris and the Pippin', 1881. In the centre of this cartoon is the Duke of Richmond. Behind him are Lords Hugh McCalmont Cairns and Salisbury. These were the three main contenders for the office of Conservative Leader in the Lords following the death of Disraeli, Lord Beaconsfield. The unexpected denouement came about when Lord Salisbury was elected over the more fancied Duke of Richmond. From Punch, or the London Charivari, May 14, 1881.
